“For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:17)
The word righteousness is the Greek word “dikaiosune” which means “you are right”. It relates to the state and not as “dikaioo” that relates to the act. So when a person is born again, he is justified by faith and by God’s grace, the persons now has righteousness based on what Christ has done; he acquires a state or status of righteousness. This state is only available in Christ, hence a person receives it as a gift according to our theme verse.
The word “gift” as it is captured in our theme verse is the Greek word “dorea”; it means free, having no condition attached and its another word for benevolence. This affirms that the gift of righteousness is FREE and has NO CONDITION attached to it.
Furthermore, it’s important to state here that righteousness doesn’t mean right living as most people think, it’s essentially a nature; the nature of God imparted into the spirit of a man at salvation that produces in the person, the rightness of God. It is only in this way a man can live right because you cannot live right until you’re righteous. That is what Jesus meant. When He said, “Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit” (Matthew 2:17-18).
According to our theme verse, we also have the word “REIGN” which is actually a verb, which in the original Greek construction means “to king”. It is used to express authority, dominion and mastery. So as believers, we demonstrate mastery; we “king” in life through righteousness. When a believer is righteousness – conscious, it eliminates every sense of guilt, inferiority and condemnation. He lives knowing too well that he’s above Satan.
Some believers experience spiritual attacks, it’s because they’re not righteousness – conscious, they lack understanding of righteousness; they can’t live victoriously over the enemy; they’re subjected to the elements of the world because they’re ignorant of the extent and potency of their authority in Christ. When you must know that you’re to reign in righteousness; Satan and his cohorts cannot stand you.
